♠ ♥ I AM THE EDITOR ♦ ♣
Book Review
Although thoughts and opinions
differ between people, I speak as one reader of the novel, and like all novels,
this novel too has its ups and downs, though with few imperfections. From my
point of view, this novel “I Am The Messenger” is a fantastic read for those
with sufficient maturity to be able to fully comprehend the problems that
arise, and to fully absorb the messages behind each chapter. Over all, it’s
packed with lessons, strong dynamic characters, excellent imagery, and evokes a
lot of emotions.
This book deserves a lot of
praise for the manner it displays good morals and ethics. All throughout the
novel, Ed Kennedy assists people with assorted life difficulties, with some
being grand, and some more minor. Markus Zusak filled this book with a lot of
influential inclusions of small acts of kindness that are sure to keep you
heart-warmed and determined to do something great in your community as well.
Though the book does not focus entirely on making the world a better place, it
also focuses on making you a better person for the sake of yourself and your
future. Beginning with the halt of a bank-robbery, and with stories from the
book such as helping an elderly woman grieve, assisting a teenage girl to
become confident and take control of her life, saving a woman who is raped on a
nightly basis by her husband, and a story of a 19 year old cab driver (Ed) with
no plan for the future, this book proves to be no silly gimmick. With a vast
variety of resolved problems, the smallest ones are strong enough to have me
shiver in awe. My only issue with these lessons is that a certain few don’t
have the greatest closure, but are still great nevertheless.
Although
the book speaks strongly of lessons and proper morals and ethics, it’s
displayed this great because of the strong dynamic characters that pertain to
them and that display these lessons. This novel focuses strongly on Ed and his
group of friends, who are Audrey, Richie, and Marv. They each have their own
distinctive personalities and character traits that make them one of a kind.
Reading this will make you feel apart of their gang, and amused by their
friendly behavior that includes both teasing, friendly, and serious matters.
They all have their own background and history behind them that gets revealed
more and more in the book. Not only that, but the characters of those
unfortunate few who required Ed’s assistance also portray very good character
formations and appear very lively and dynamic. I have no arguments with the
characters since they all cooperate well and play their roles flawlessly, even
to the extent where they reveal their more unpleasant sides, it makes it that
much more human-like.
There was
also exquisite use of imagery ensuring that every scene and every moment is
envisioned smoothly in your mind. I found it enticing to read the author’s
descriptions of every new setting in his words with his inclusions of literary
devices that supports with envisioning what’s going on. Because of this, every
scene is memorable and difficult to forget. The imagery in this novel is
strongly enjoyable allowing it to be clear and easy to discover the themes of
the book, such as morality, friendship, love and loneliness. From the beginning
chapter of the novel, Zusak thoroughly describes what he must for us to imagine
the scene as great as possible, such on the 5th page of Chapter 1
when he says: “She’s shivering nearly as bad as the gunman as she waits for
some zitty twenty-nine-year-old fella with a tie and sweat patches under his
arms to fill the bag with money.” Zusak keeps it humorous and real, and doesn’t
feed us too much information, but instead just the right quantity making this
book fair-paced rather than very rushed or dragging on.
Not only
that, a lot of emotion was included in this book, so I suppose you can say they
use quite a bit of pathos to attract you in this novel. You will certainly feel
precisely what the author has planned for you to feel when you discover Ed’s
discoveries along this novel. When certain characters suffer a bad experience
such as when you (the reader) and Ed discovers of, let’s say, Angelina, the
daughter of the father who rapes his wife nightly, and seeing the effects on
her, we feel similar feelings to both Ed and Angelina, such as shock and
sorrow. Assorted feelings are displayed with every character, which is why they
seem to be dynamic because they all display feelings themselves that transfer
onto us readers. The tone in the text and the mood in the atmosphere also
assist with making the readers feel similarly to them. This novel includes
plenty of feelings though, such as suspense, pride, love, and sorrowful, making
you feel and feel. This strongly assisted with the themes of loneliness and
morality, giving you the greatest grasp of the feelings of accomplishment and
the feelings of being alone in dire need of assistance.
Over all, the novel’s variety of
lessons, lively characters, strong imagery, and use of pathos tie together,
support the themes, and form a masterpiece that is this book. With loads of mysteries
that will keep your pages turning, this book won’t cease to impress you until
it’s been completely concluded. I believe it’s an excellent book with little to
few flaws that can go easily undetected. With less than 400 pages, this book is
compact and well written to assure everything flows smoothly together to form this
wicked storyline. This book is a fantastic read for those interested in a
variety of things, but certainly those interested in a good love story full of
suspense and appreciation.
